Music

Intent:

Gulworthy Academy is committed to providing a broad and balanced music curriculum which is accessible and enjoyed by all. Our underlying intent is for children to grasp the knowledge of the interrelated dimensions of music. This is made up of: pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and notation which provide the building blocks to music. Through the use of a well-structured music programme, we are able to plan, apply, monitor and recap these fundamental areas and keep standards in music high across all year groups. Children are able to show their knowledge of musicality through a plethora of opportunities including: musical games and activities, composing and performing.

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • be taught to sing, create and compose music
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated

Implementation:

At Gulworthy Academy we use Charanga to support the teaching of music from reception to year 6. Charanga offers an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to music learning. The interrelated dimensions of music (Listen and respond, Explore and create, Singing and performing) weave through units covering a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres, encouraging the development of musical skills as the learning progresses. Charanga Musical School Units of Work enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. At Gulworthy Academy, we believe learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Children are guided through each strand of musical learning from Reception to Upper Key Stage 2 in order for them to have the opportunity to embed deeper learning, knowledge, understanding and skills.

Our music curriculum is taught in blocks throughout the academic year. In order for children to process, retain and importantly reapply their pre-existing knowledge in music, we provide musical activities throughout the whole school year that are related to their previous music module. These are in many formats such as through quizzes, singing and mini performances.

Impact:

At Gulworthy Academy the music curriculum ensures children listen and respond to music, explore and create, sing and play and share and perform. This is embedded through classroom activities as well as the weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances and the joining of one of our musical ensembles. The impact this has on our children is very evident with children’s confidence in composing and performing evident by their understanding of pulse, rhythm, and melody.  Our music curriculum gives children the chance to build on pre-existing musical skills and reflect on their musical practises. Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer.
