Intent
At Lamerton and Gulworthy Academy, the principal aim of RSE is to allow pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life past education. It is our intent, that all children will be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. All children are guided to develop their full potential and their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded. We believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect; celebrating and accepting difference in our academy community and beyond, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. The teaching and learning of RSE using ‘1 Decision’ supports this.The aims of relationships and sex education (RSE) at our academies are to:
Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take placePrepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
As an academy, we must provide relationships education to all pupils as per section 34 of the Children and Social work act 2017.
However, we are not required to provide sex education but we do need to teach the elements of sex education contained in the science curriculum.
In teaching RSE, we must have regard to guidance issued by the secretary of state as outlined in section 403 of the Education Act 1996.
EYFS:
Lamerton and Gulworthy strive to ensure our youngest children foster strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults enabling them to learn how to understand their own feelings and those of others. They are supported to manage emotions, develop a positive sense of self, set themselves simple goals, have confidence in their own abilities, to persist and wait for what they want and direct attention as necessary. Through adult modelling and guidance, our children will learn how to look after their bodies, including healthy eating, and manage personal needs independently. For example good oral hygiene is taught through daily teeth cleaning at both schools.
Through supported interaction with other children and dedicated circle time with KS1, they learn how to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts peaceably. These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life.
Implementation at KS1 and KS2:
RSE is taught within the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education curriculum. Biological aspects of RSE are taught within the science curriculum, and other aspects are included in religious education (RE).
Pupils also receive stand-alone sex education sessions.

At Lamerton and Gulworthy, we seek to ensure that the RSE that we teach, improves the physical, mental and social well-being of pupils. Through our RSE education, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, aspirational and confident individuals. Providing a consistent and regular delivery of the 1 Decision Scheme of Work, alongside circle time and KS2 class assembly sessions, allows us to fulfil this.
